If you close your eyes and picture Greenwich, you’re most likely thinking of the Backcountry. Winding, tree-lined roads. Spacious acres. Once the location of sprawling historic estates, the land is now a destination for stunning mansions with modern amenities.
There is plenty to love about this pastoral haven. Backcountry Greenwich trades busy commercial centers for lush woodlands and fenced-in pastures. Over 150 miles of riding trails and several golf courses make it a popular place for outdoor recreation. The Backcountry balances its peaceful atmosphere and scenic countryside with convenient proximity to hotspots like Westchester County Airport.
The Backcountry is the home of the famed Greenwich Polo Club, which hosts world-class matches every year. The community also houses the Audubon Center, a collection of seven nature sanctuaries and one of the country’s first environmental education centers. The Griffith E. Harris Golf Course, known as “The Griff” to locals, is one of Greenwich’s hidden gems.
Almost exclusively single-family homes, the Backcountry draws in growing families looking for tranquility and privacy. Unlike developments along the waterfront, you’re more likely to back up against a nature preserve than a busy street.
